Canal Zone Air Terminal - Stained Glass Window Sticker
$11.00
The sticker we offer here has been printed from a complete digital rebuild of the stained glass window seen in the original Canal Zone Air Terminal building in Ancon, although you may remember the same building from it's many different services like the Drive-Inn, the Canal Zone Library Museum, or the Civil Affairs Bureau where you got your official ID cards. Around the outer ring of this sticker design, the letters that were displayed on the airfield side of the original building spelling out “CANAL ZONE” with “AIR TERMINAL” added here for historical purposes are here printed on a clear backing to highlight the window’s original aeronautical theme.
Through all the various services that building played, this stained glass window always hung high in the center over the entrance and could be clearly seen from both inside and outside the building, the latter view highlighting its stained glass beauty. This window has always had an impact on me as I’m sure it has had with many of you.
Originally designed by Lt. Col. Norman J. Riebe in 1943, this stained glass window incorporated a wing and propeller motif against the flags representing all the countries in the Pan-American Union of the time with the Panamanian and American flags prominently displayed in front.
In order to offer this unique design as a sticker, we had to recreate the stained-glass window in the computer with very careful study of fading reference photos (as old photos tend to do) where the artist found opportunities to enhance colors and insignias of some flags so they may more clearly and honestly represent the countries they stand for, a careful balancing act between what can still be seen in the reference photographs and what those countries flags actually look like.
